DIY first

How to fix a heater that won't turn on

  1. Check the thermostat

Select Heat mode, set the target well above room temperature, and check the batteries.

  2. Find the furnace switch

It looks like a light switch and can be knocked off accidentally. Make sure it is on, without opening the furnace.

  3. Check the breaker

Only if the panel is dry and undamaged, switch the tripped breaker fully off, then on once. If it trips again, stop.

  4. Check the filter

A badly clogged filter can trigger the high-limit shutoff. Replace it with the correct size and rating.

  5. Check the condensate drain

Look for visible pooling or a blocked drain outlet. A blocked line can trip a float switch on high-efficiency units. Do not bypass it.

  6. Look for a status light

Observe through the viewing window without opening panels. Count the flashes and quote the code when you call.

When to stop and call

  • If you smell gas, leave immediately without operating switches. Call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 from outside; call 911 for immediate danger.
  • If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, everyone must leave immediately and call 911 from outside. Do not re-enter until responders say it is safe.
  • Burning that doesn't clear, scorching or soot near the burners means stop using the heater and call.
  • The heater lights, then shuts down repeatedly.

How a heater repair visit works

  1. 1

    Safety check first

Every gas appliance gets one regardless of what you called about.

  2. 2

    Full diagnostic

We test the ignition sequence, not just the symptom you described.

  3. 3

    Fixed written price

    Explained before anything starts.

  4. 4

    Repaired and tested

Full heat cycle, and combustion checked before we leave.

What heater repair costs

Most no-heat calls come down to an igniter, a flame sensor, a pressure switch or a control board. Those are parts, not systems. If we find a cracked heat exchanger or a combustion problem you'll be told plainly, and we won't restart a system that isn't safe to run.
